Eating While Driving

We spend so much time in our vehicles that sometimes it feels like we live in them. Most people spend over 45 minutes driving just one way to work. We rush to get ready in the morning and perhaps get our children ready so breakfast is usually eaten in the car while we commute.

It may seem like a great idea to use all that extra time in the car to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but it really isn't. Eating while driving is a major cause of car accidents; in fact, it is the fourth leading cause of crashes and near misses.

This number may seem pretty surprising, but if you think about it, eating food when driving is distracting. The best way that any one of us can avoid an accident is to have all our concentration on the road. Here are some foods that you can eat that aren't as distracting as burgers, fries, and tacos.

  • Single servings of milk or juice
  • Single serving boxes of cereal
  • Trail mix, energy bars, pretzels
  • Bananas, apples, grapes, or nectarines
  • Carrot and celery sticks
  • Granola bars and other types of bars
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
